GHS Regulatory Update

Exclamation Point

The new global harmonization system (GHS) revisions to OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard represent some of the biggest changes to impact the chemical industry in a very long time.

Nyco continues to prepare for the new requirements, and our customers will see them implemented over the next year and a half, including changes to product labels and the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) format. SDS replaces the previous MSDS.

Following is a recap with effective dates of the major changes and responsibilities that may impact you:

Corrosion

  • December 1, 2013 – This was the deadline for ALL employers (distributors, end users and manufacturers) to train employees exposed to hazardous chemicals on the new GHS label elements and Safety Data Sheets. If you have not yet done this, you must do it immediately. Nyco can help. Download our GHS Training Presentation, or call us at 800-752-4754 for assistance.
  • June 1, 2015 – Chemical manufacturers are required to have labels and SDSs updated according to new requirements. Hazardous chemical product labels must incorporate new standardized “pictograms”. For an explanation of these visual hazard icons, see our GHS Training Presentation. Manufacturers are also required to have all SDSs revised to the new 16-section format. Nyco will be phasing in both of these significant changes across all of our products over the next 16 months.
  • June 1, 2015 – Distributors and other chemical resellers must begin using the new SDS format and supply it with the first shipment of product on or after this date.
  • December 1, 2015 – Distributors may not ship containers labeled by a chemical manufacturer after this date unless they are in the new GHS label format.
  • June 1, 2016 – Employers must update alternative workplace labeling  (secondary labels, transfer labels, etc.) and hazard communication program as necessary, and provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards.

You can be confident that Nyco has expertise in regulatory compliance and will provide all that you need for new OSHA GHS standards regarding labels and SDSs. Again, please do not hesitate to contact us or call 800-752-4754 with any questions.
